Dr. James William Shaver, Landis, N.C., was elected to the Board of Directors of Woodmen of the World/Omaha Woodmen Life Insurance Society effective April 1, 2006.

Dr. Shaver is a 1984 graduate of Campbell University in Buies Creek, NC, and received his Doctor of Optometry Degree in 1988 from the University of Houston College of Optometry in Houston, Texas. He is in private practice in Landis, N.C. Dr. Shaver is a life-long Woodmen of the World member, and the son of retired Woodmen of the World Director Dr. Thomas Shaver.

Dr. Shaver is Past President and Chairman of Trustees of the Woodmen of the World North Carolina Jurisdiction and has served on several jurisdictional committees. He is Past President and current Secretary of Woodmen of the World Lodge 111 in Landis, and was a youth lodge leader in Mt. Olive and Salisbury, NC. Dr. Shaver serves on the Special Fraternal Strategic Committee, an ad hoc committee appointed in 2006 by former President James Mounce to develop a long-range plan for the Woodmen of the World Fraternal Program.

Dr. Shaver has served on the Boards of the North Carolina Fraternal Congress and the R.C. "Cliff" Payne Woodmen Camp. He is a past recipient of the Mr. Woodman (Fraternal Spirit) award, and Woodmen of the World's Meritorious Service award. Dr. Shaver has served on numerous Woodmen of the World national committees, including the National Judiciary Committee (2005-2006), National Legislative Committee (2001-2005), Resolutions Committee (2001) and Executive Officers' Reports Committee (1993).

Dr. Shaver is married to the former Stephanie Miles of China Grove, N.C., and they have one daughter, Augusta. They are members of First Reformed Church of Landis.

An amateur magician and history buff, Dr. Shaver is a member of the Sons of the American Revolution, International Brotherhood of Magicians, Society of American Magicians, American Optometric Association, North Carolina State Optometric Society, Piedmont Optometric Society and the North Carolina Zoological Society.
